In 2009, almost half a million people living on the frontline of climate change have told their stories at Oxfam’s Climate Hearings. Now, days before the crucial Copenhagen talks, it’s your chance to join the debate.

Oxfam and the London Assembly Environment Committee are working together to host the city’s first climate hearing. Meet Londoners whose families around the globe are facing the consequences of climate change, learn about the impact of the capital’s emissions on communities here, and share your ideas about the positive role that London can play in building a safer, greener future.

The hearing will also feature a dramatic production from Blue Elephant theatre group and a reading from Nobel Laureate author Ben Okri.

Oxfam will take London’s stories along with those from people all over the world to the UN climate negotiations at Copenhagen, to back our call for a fair, ambitious and binding deal.

Greanpeace is kick-starting a new public engagement campaign around coal. They will be getting people in the street using coal fragments or charcoal to sketch a picture or write a message to Ed Miliband telling him to stop building new coal-fired power stations in the UK. Miliband has to go to Copenhagen with a strong line of “No Coal”. There is a good group going but the more the merrier. They are also aiming to take some photos for the local press. See you there!

Where: Lyric Square – Hammersmith, King Street, Hammersmith, W6 0QL

Gunnersbury Park and Hammersmith/Fulham

Greenpeace will be planting trees locally and inviting along local MPs and community groups to celebrate. These trees will be twinned with the trees being planted on the ‘Airplot’, which is on the land where the Govt intend to build the third runway. We say ‘No third runway’ and believe in choosing a low-carbon future. The trees represent sustainability for the future. They are also symbolic of the area in Sipson which is home to the discovery of the Cox apple. The idea is to drum up some publicity and good-feeling around the event and demonstrate how a low-carbon future could actually be a happier one – more connected to reality and the communities in which we live.

More details to be confirmed eg. location, exact times, who’s coming!

At Oxfam we know why we care about climate change: because it is having an impact here and now on the world’s poorest. But what do you really know about climate change and why should you care? And what are our politicians doing about climate change?

2009 is a vital year for combating climate change. In December world leaders will come together in Copenhagen to try to work out a global deal to prevent the sort of climate change that will profoundly affect the planet and everyone on it.

Come and put your questions about all things climate to a panel of local leaders, including Stephen Timms MP, Councillor Paul Sathianesan, Sabino Miranda of the Climate Change Youth Development Trust. We will also have speakers from London 2012 to talk about the environmental impact of the Olympics and a speaker from the European Action Group on Climate Change in Bangladesh.

The event is open and free to all but it would be great if you could RSVP to Sophie Freeman – sfreeman@oxfam.org.uk.

Please email scotland@planestupid.com ASAP.

Let’s show em how ceilidhs are done!

About the ceilidh:

A fun event with a serious purpose
Whatever next! Activists organising a Ceilidh. Communal dancing to live bands. Particularly popular in Scotland and Ireland

But this one will be in England, not far from Heathrow. It’s a fun event, with a serious purpose. It has been put together by NoTRAG (The No Third Runway Action Group) and activists from Adopt-A-Resident.

Earlier this year over 50 activists ‘adopted’ more than 50 residents who live in the communities threatened by a third runway. The activists pledged to help the residents defend their communities should a third runway ever be built. Come back to Heathrow from all over the UK, dance the night away and continue building the resistance against runaway climate change.

The Ceilidh is one of a series of events where residents and activists can get to know each other better and to show that we are ready to stand up and be counted.

The Ceilidh is being held on October 10th, from 7pm – 11pm at West Drayton Community Centre, Harmondsworth Road, West Drayton.

Bands: Lively and upbeat dance with Cut a Shine and our very own PIG EARTH from Harmondsworth and many more!

How to get your dancing shoes on: Bus 222 from West Drayton – Hounslow. Get off at West Drayton Police Station, cross road, turn right at traffic lights and the centre is on your right. Bus 222 from Hounslow get off at West Drayton Police Station, walk back towards traffic lights, turn right and Centre is on your right

Oxfam’s London and South East team invite you to the launch of the Canvas for Change exhibition, which opens on Tuesday 15th September in the cafe at City Hall, The Queen’s Walk, London.

The exhibition aims to draw the attention of Londoners to the human impact of climate change, with canvases created by communities in London and from across the world. We hope to encourage people to think about London’s link to the world and of the impact Londoners can have globally by acting locally.

Making the links between the economy, decent work, the environment and the global fight against poverty.

Setting the agenda for the future.

The Put People First G20 Counter Conference is one of two alternative G20 conferences being held simultaneously in London and St Andrews on November 7th to coincide with the G20 finance ministers meeting on 7th-8th November. The conference will take place at Westminster Central Hall, a fantastic venue right in the heart of London.

Over three plenary sessions we invite academics, activists, campaigners, unions and policy makers to debate alternative policies to promote jobs, justice and a safe climate.

Smaller breakout sessions will give you the opportunity to take part in more focused debates on the linkages between the economy, environment and international development and in addition, discuss how we can mobilise and turn our ideas into action.

The Counter Conference is part of a series of events happening in London that week in reaction to the G20 finance ministers’ summit.

The Counter Conference will be preceded by a policy conference Recovery towards what? Finance, justice, sustainability hosted by the TUC at the Congress Centre, including a public event on the evening of the 6 November with high level political speeches.

The event is sponsored by Friends of the Earth, ActionAid, Fairtrade Foundation, World Development Movement, War on Want, Jubilee Debt Campaigm Trade Justice Movement, TUC and others
