What’s it about?
Educating children about climate change.
Focusing children on their own energy consumption.
Encouraging action by asking children and / or their families to cut their carbon emissions in some way.

The aim is for 1 million children to take part.
370 schools have already registered (as at 1st November 2009, representing more than 150,000 pupils).

Why take part?
Climate change will affect our children more than ourselves.
Schools have a vital role to play in educating children about the issue.
Our children influence our own behaviour – research has shown that families are more likely to recycle if children are taught the benefits in schools.
Low Carbon Day will be a fun and fascinating morning for pupils and teachers.
There are lots of lesson plans already available so extra work should not be required.

On Saturday 21st November, at Chapelfield Gardens, Norwich, at 12 noon, concerned Norfolk residents and campaigners will gather to demand maximum effort from Government at the forthcoming Copenhagen Climate Summit.

At 12.30, the Norwich Samba Band will lead off a colourful, family-friendly march through the streets of Norwich to assemble at The Forum at 1.15pm.

The march, which has been organised by members of the Stop Climate Chaos Coalition including Norfolk Campaign Against Climate Change (NCACC) and Friends of the Earth, aims to be the biggest ever demonstration in support of action on climate change the city has ever seen.

Friends of the Earth are calling on Government to commit to 40% cuts in emissions by 2020 without carbon offsetting – break the current logjam in negotiations and protect the future of millions of people already living with the effects of climate change.

It is vital that the US get on board and agree to the cold, hard cash that developing countries demand – to ensure that they can grow cleanly and adapt to the effects of climate change. Already millions of lives are at risk.

Michael Uwins, Climate Campaigner with Norwich Friends of the Earth said:

We must remember that every single person living today, especially our children, will be affected by the decisions made in Copenhagen. Whether we like it or not, climate scientists are telling us that mankind’s input has put the climate in deep trouble.

World leaders must put their bickering to one side and declare an international state of emergency now and take immediate action to reduce harmful global warming gas emissions. If the decisions made mean we all must make sacrifices - then so be it, that’s the price we’ll have to pay to avoid potential catastrophe.

Norwich has the reputation of being an environmentally aware city and this march will give it’s residents the opportunity to have their say and be heard.

Trevor Phillips of NCACC said:

Solutions to this crisis exist but only if we press Government to act fast: there must be emergency action to cut greenhouse gases, greater investment in clean energy, insulation and better public transport and the creation of more ‘green jobs’ to do all this. This is affordable, it tackles unemployment, raises tax revenues and benefits everyone.

LCCN members Winchester Action on Climate Change have teamed up with Southampton University to mount a two day interactive workshop. This is a great opportunity to hear and discuss ideas for community level action from a wide range of speakers, several of whom are LCCN members/supporters. Information from WinACC below.

Everyone welcome on one or both days, especially people who are active on climate change locally.
Come to explore national policy options and changes that we can make in our communities to help prevent runaway climate change at this important workshop just ahead of vitally important international negotiations at the UN Conference of the Parties in Copenhagen in December. More information at http://transitiontolowcarbon.org/

Engage with leading experts on policy and sustainability and together work out how to convert ideas into action.
On Friday the conference focusses on UK policy in a global context. On Saturday it explores how to develop carbon reduction measures at a community level. A wide range of schemes will be discussed including co-operatively owned renewable energy projects.

Speakers on both days will be encouraged to think about the relationship between national policy and community approaches.Speakers include politicians, climate policy analysts and practitioners from a range of innovative ‘grass roots’ projects for fossil fuel reduction.

Discovery Centre, Jewry St, Winchester

Entry is by donation on the door – recommended donations from people in work are:
Individuals: Day 1: £20, Day 2: £10
Institutional: one day £50, both days £75

You can register to ensure a place by emailing Nick Woodman on n.d.woodman@soton.ac.uk with ‘Transition’ in the title saying which days you plan to attend.

Monday 16th November, 19:00-21:00, Ferrier Hall, Cardiff City Hall, Civic Centre

Oxfam’s Climate Hearings project will bring the voices of those most affected by climate change direct to decision makers around the world at local, national, regional and international levels. From Aberystwyth to Zambia, Oxfam is organising events which will take testimony from people and turn their experiences into effective pressure.

From local villages to large-scale moments, the hearings will provide a platform for the people who are most vulnerable to climate change to place their experiences directly before those who can do something about it.

This is a public meeting where speakers will give their account of the impacts of climate change from their perspective. We are aiming to present both local and global stories, which we will record to put pressure on decision-makers at all levels of government – and at the crucial UN climate talks to be held in Copenhagen in December.

Speakers including Oxfam GB’s Regional Director for Southern Africa Charles Abani on climate change in Africa; Maria Mesa from Colombia; Amy Cuff from Cardiff talks about her experiences in Nepal; Rodney Berman, leader of Cardiff Council on climate change in Cardiff; James Oxenham on climate change and farming in the UK.

In 2009, almost half a million people living on the frontline of climate change have told their stories at Oxfam’s Climate Hearings. Now, days before the crucial Copenhagen talks, it’s your chance to join the debate.

Oxfam and the London Assembly Environment Committee are working together to host the city’s first climate hearing. Meet Londoners whose families around the globe are facing the consequences of climate change, learn about the impact of the capital’s emissions on communities here, and share your ideas about the positive role that London can play in building a safer, greener future.

The hearing will also feature a dramatic production from Blue Elephant theatre group and a reading from Nobel Laureate author Ben Okri.

WWF CYMRU APPEAL – HELP SOLVE CLIMATE CRIME

HELP solve climate crime for WWF Cymru.

This year is the most important year ever for our climate with UN negotiations concluding in Copenhagen in December.

As world leaders prepare to meet at the special summit to decide and agree upon a new global climate deal, WWF Cymru are campaigning for the Welsh Assembly Government and the UK Government, to push for a 40 per cent reduction target in carbon emissions by 2020 at the conference.

To raise awareness of this critical time for action on climate change WWF Cymru will be holding Climate Crime Scene road shows at University of Wales, Cardiff (UWIC) on November 3, at the new Campus Centre at Cyncoed and at Swansea University, on November 12, at the Student Union

WWF Cymru will be setting up the outline of a life-sized polar bear cordoned off with police tape to show to people the dramatic and possible signs of things to come unless we tackle climate change now.

WWF Cymru will be inviting students at the University campuses and supporters alike, to visit the Climate Crime Scene in order to see how climate change is threatening the future of the planet and could lead to the extinction of animals like the polar bear.

WWF Cymru will be asking people to sign up to its postcard petition to demonstrate their support for a 40 per cent reduction in carbon emissions ask during the University Climate Crime Scene roadshows.

All signatures gained during the roadshows and via WWF-Cymru’s online sign-up will be passed onto the Welsh Assembly Government’s Environment Minister Jane Davidson, who in turn will take our message and that of Welsh supporters to the UK Government and to the Copenhagen conference.

To find out more about signing up to WWF-Cymru’s Climate Change postcard campaign and how you can get involved visit www.wwf.org.uk/wales
